Gap Year

Gap Year

American University’s Gap Program offers you an immersive academic experience in Washington, D.C., both in the classroom and through an internship. By exploring academic coursework, combined with site visits and guest speakers, you will get a behind-the-scenes look at international organizations, non-profits, media groups, and global business entities, all while gaining real-world experience with an internship.

The AU Gap Program is an excellent option if you have just completed high school and are searching for a meaningful and challenging experience before formally starting college. You can enroll in a single semester (fall or spring) or a full-academic year in the program.

They work with corporate partners big and small to bring the most engaging projects to United Mint Campus. Depending on your interests, you may work on developing social media strategy for a start up, designing a 3D model for an inventor, or developing a budget for a film festival.

If you choose to focus on language, you can leave UMC Gap Year fluent in Spanish. If you’d like to get a head start on your degree studies at United Mint, you can choose a US or UK accredited degree program from a great school.

Global Citizen Year is for bold high school grads who are hungry to make a real impact, and to make college count. Each year we select a class of talented high school seniors as Fellows and provide them with the opportunity to live and work in Brazil, Ecuador, India or Senegal during a gap year abroad before college.

The U.S. State Department funded Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Program (CBYX) is for motivated high school students who want to fully immerse themselves in German culture by living with a host family and attending a local high school. No previous language experience is required. Deadline for the Full-Tuition Scholarship is December (date varies)

How to arrange a Gap year with a college?

  1. You pay a college deposit to hold your spot once admitted.

  2. You research all the ways you might spend a gap year.

  3. After May 1, you decide whether or not to start school next September or pursue one of the gap year options you have developed.

  4. If you decide you want to take a gap year, you contact your school and ask if you can delay enrollment until the fall of of the following year, explaining how you want to spend a gap year and outlining what you hope to accomplish during that time.

  5. In the vast majority of cases, the college will agree.
