Summer Educational Opportunities

Want to take a summer class at a Community College? 

Peralta Colleges offer concurrent enrollment opportunities for high school students.  LINK for information.  Take a course that you are interested in not one that you think will "look good" on your college app. Take a class we don't offer here at AHS.  Something you always wanted to learn more about.  

Laney offers some interesting summer offerings in the Laney Summer Institute courses and these are FREE.  Here is a Link .  These courses are great for 8th graders and up.

Helix Summer Medical Program at UC Berkeley - Diversifying the future of healthcare - Apply by January 29th, 2022

Summer Researchers in Global Health Internship UCSF - is a six-week summer internship for rising high school seniors that introduces students to global health concepts and immerses them in challenging, real-life projects with researchers at UCSF. Interns receive direct mentorship from global health experts and participate in weekly case discussions and group activities led by graduate student instructors. Topics include HIV/AIDS, malaria, tuberculosis, maternal health, preterm birth, climate change, COVID and emerging infectious diseases, and more. Interns with financial need may qualify for a stipend of $2,000.  Application deadline: March 1, 2022

SUMMER PROGRAMS WITH A MATH, SCIENCE OR STEM FOCUS:

  • Acadia Institute of Oceanography - Seal Harbor, Maine
  • Summer Engineering Seminar - Santa Clara University -  This special summer experience is for high school students (who have completed 10th or 11th grade) may be curious about engineering. The program is designed to acquaint participants with the engineering profession, the academic expectations of college and the nature of life at a university.
  • Young Scholars Program Santa Clara University- This summer program allows high school students to enroll in engineering-related college level courses during the summer.  Courses include engineering, as well as math, science, business and humanities courses.
  • BlueStamp Engineering - BlueStamp Engineering is a six-week summer program for high school students to build engineering projects they are passionate about. Financial aid is available
  • Cardiac Camp at UCSF run by local medical students in over 30 cities nationwide, serve as an ideal introduction for any high school student interested in exploring a career in medicine.
  • COSMOS California State Summer School for Mathematics and Science.  Applications is available in January and due in February 19, 2021. 
  • Harvey Mudd College  -"Fall Fast Program" (Future Achievers in Science and Technology) for seniors (application is due in August) Spring FAST Program for juniors - (application is due in March).The Programs include Class Visits, Research Lab Demos, Overnight stay in one of our Residence Halls (Fall FAST only), hands on Experiments/Workshops, HMC student activities, and much more.  Most importantly, participants will have the opportunity to interact with HMC students, professors and other college-bound students who share their passion for Math and Science.The FAST Programs are absolutely free, and participants receive a Fee Waiver for their HMC Freshman Application.
  • Maven Youth - Empowering Queer Youth through Tech. They offer a Tech summer camp in San Francisco.  
  • Missouri Science & Technology Summer Programs - Lots of Pre-Engineering camps including: Explosives Camp, Robotics & Nuclear engineering Camp.
  • MITES at MIT University - Summer program that is free but students are responsible for travel expenses to and from MIT.  Students apply during their junior year.  The application is available on November and due in February.​
  • Penn Engineering - six programs: bio-engineering, computer graphics, computer science, complex networks, nanotechnology, robotics.
  • Smith College - Summer Science & Engineering Program for high school girlsApplication is available in January and due in April. SSEP is open to academically talented girls who will enter grades 9, 10, 11 or 12.
  • SMASH Academy -   SMASH is... 
    • A three-year 5-week summer math and science enrichment program.
    • For high achieving, low-income high school students of color.
    • Focused on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
    • Successful in preparing scholars for college and achievement in higher education.
    • Free of cost.
    • Applications are available in February - Due in March.​
  • Stanford Office of Science Outreach - offers a host of different offerings for high school students including the two below.
  • Stanford Medical Youth Science Program - Deadline February 15
    • Are a current sophomore or junior high school student (at the time of your application) who lives and attends high school in one of the 20 Northern or Central California counties from which we recruit. Preference is given to students who are juniors at the time of their application.
    • Are from a low-income family whose members have little or no history of attending college. 
    • Have demonstrated an interest in science and have received a B-average in some of your science classes.
    • Have demonstrated an interest in medicine and/or health-related careers and show maturity, intelligence, initiative, and curiosity about the world around you.
  • Stanford RISE Summer Internship (Raising Interest in Science and Engineering) - Deadline: February 202 RISE Participants:
    • An intense and rewarding research experience
    • Weekly community enrichment activities
    • A stipend of $2,500
    • Graduate student or post-doctoral mentor
    • A network of like-minded high school students who love science and engineering
  • Ross Mathematics Program - at Ohio State University is an intensive summer experience designed to encourage motivated pre-college students to explore mathematics. During those six weeks, students are immersed in a world of mathematical discovery.
  • YSPA Yale Summer Program in Astrophysics - highly selective research & enrichment program for 32 high school juniors and seniors.
  • Girls Who Code -  The Summer Immersion Program is a FREE 7-week summer program for 10th-11th grade girls to learn computer science, get exposure to tech jobs and join a supportive sisterhood of thousands of girls across the US!

ABROAD PROGRAMS

  1. CIEE Council for International Educational Exchange -  they offer three program options: Language & Culture (4 weeks), Service & Leadership (3 weeks) & Global Discovery (3 weeks).  Global Navigator Scholarships are available only through CIEE, to cover between 10% and 100% of the tuition cost.

  • Fallingwater - This week-long high school residency program is focused on architecture, environment and design in the context of Frank Lloyd Wright's masterpiece, Fallingwater, one of America's most significant works of architecture.
  • embARC Design Academy at UC Berkeley -  embARC is an intensive, four-week summer design academy for high school students held at the College of Environmental Design (CED). embARC brings together students from diverse backgrounds to CED to study architecture, urban design, and sustainable city planning through a series of lectures, field trips and a design:build studio.

  • California State Summer School for the Arts -  (CSSSA) is a rigorous pre-professional training program in the visual and performing arts, creative writing, animation, and film for talented artists of high school age. Financial Aid is available. Application Deadline is late February.
